AMERICAN BULLDOG
History
The American bulldog breed originated from the English
bulldog around the end of the 17th - beginning of the 18th centuries, in
America, when the colonists (and, subsequently, farmers) needed protection both
in moving across the vast expanses of new land, and in grazing cattle. The main problem of farmers at that time and in that area was wild boars, various rodents,
hares, foxes, and wolves.
If cats were brought into the fight against rodents (you can
read more about them here), then more serious helpers were needed to fight wild
boars, foxes, and wolves.
Dogs - English bulldogs and dogs of undetermined breed (crossbreed),
freely crossed among themselves, as a result of which the American bulldog
appeared. He had many characteristic features of the English bulldogs but was
much larger (thanks to crossbreeding with large dogs of an indefinite breed),
and therefore was better suited for defense and attack functions.

Description
Slender, muscular, tall (up to 70 cm), these dogs have a
very similar head structure to the English Bulldog. Ears are folded forward,
but they are usually stopped at a young age. The chest is wide, the whole
physique directly indicates the strength and innate qualities of a fighter and
a guard. The colors may be different, but the most common are white and white
with black spots.
American Bulldog gains weight and muscle mass well. Today,
there are three main types of dog American Bulldog. It:
•
bully or Classic, also
known as Johnson type;
•
type Standard (aka
Performance), which is called the type of Scott;
•
hybrids of the two above
types.
Personality
Despite the innate qualities of a fighter and defender,
these are very kind and easy-to-handle dogs. They get along well with children
and people of any age, have an inexhaustible supply of energy, like to spend
time on the street, like games and strength training. They perfectly integrate
into any family and can become a friend with a single owner, establishing strong
relationships with their beloved people.
Although these dogs have a very friendly and open character,
nevertheless, in handling them (and, in particular, in the process of training
and education), the same openness, justice, and kindness are required.
Inadequacy, unjust cries, or beatings will extremely negatively affect the psyche of the animal.
The American Bulldog breed requires early socialization,
especially if there is a child in the house. The same can be said about cats -
a dog needs to be taught from an early age to the presence of a cat in the
house, otherwise, it will be much more difficult in the future. Despite the fact
that the American bulldog feels normal in a city apartment, it is still
preferable to keep him in a private house. So that the dog has constant access
to the street, and can give the output of its energy in various types of activity.
Training
The American Bulldog is a very open and extremely active dog, from which one should proceed from upbringing. If the animal does not walk freely and gets tired on the street from training and runningaround, he will not be able to realize his energy supply.
This can lead to a variety of consequences - from enchanting mess in the house
while you are at work, to disobedience to a walk, when the dog can run away and
it will be necessary to look for it for several hours.
If you go out for a walk, make a variety - besides standard
stick throws, try going out with a dog for jogging, training it in teams,
encouraging success. It is also important to communicate with other dogs on the
street - that is, you can communicate with their owners, and your pet will be
happy to play with new friends. In this regard, problems should not arise.
How to take care of an American Bulldog?
Short hair requires virtually no care, bathing can be done
as necessary, but at least 1 time per week. Be sure to keep your ears and eyes
clean and trim your claws.
Common Diseases
In general, these are healthy animals with good immunity.
But, an American bulldog can still be inclined:
·
To cataracts, demodicosis, and hypothyroidism.
·
The breed may develop hip
or elbow dysplasia, especially if the dogs gain weight too quickly in the first
two years.
·
Some American bulldogs may
suffer from brachycephalic syndrome and have difficulty coping with hot
weather. Dogs with white or mostly white hair are more prone to sunburn and
possibly skin cancer (in rare cases). A protective cream for dogs can help when
they are outdoors for a long time.
Responsible breeders check individuals for hip dysplasia. This is why your puppy's parents should have medical certificates for checking hip dysplasia, including an assessment of the condition of the hip joint.
