Appenzeller Sennenhund
History
Appenzeller Sennenhund is an ancient breed of dog, native to
the Swiss Alps. There are different opinions about the origin of these animals.
So, researchers Ann Rogers Clark and Andrew H. Brace believe that these large,
kind dogs descended from Roman dog herders. The Romans delivered them during
the conquests of the successor Julius Caesar - Octavian Augustus, and then
these useful animals were very popular with the locals.
Due to its size, used not only for grazing but also for
other purposes - protection of estates and even a tractor dog, able to move
goods in small carts. There are now four indigenous breeds of Sennenhund dogs
in the Swiss Alps, and the appenzeller Sennenhund is the rarest. The first serious
references in literature can be found in the middle of the 19th century, but
only in 1989, the breed was officially recognized by international
organizations. Moreover, if the International Cynological Federation referred
them to as cattle dogs, the American Kennel Club did not recognize them at all, as
well as some other English-speaking clubs.

Personality
The breed of Appenzeller Sennenhund is distinguished not
only by its strength but also by the kindness of character. If you have a big
family, this good man is guaranteed to be the best friend of the children.
Although in fairness, it should be allowed to the dog under the supervision of
adults or older children, because of the large size and weight, it can
inadvertently knock over the child.
In addition, these animals have the instincts of a cattle
dog laid very deep, and sometimes they can manifest in the fact that your dog
can lightly bite children by the heels. Perhaps in the mind of the dog, the
responsibility for sheep or cows is akin to responsibility for the child. By
the way, appenzeller Sennenhund takes this very responsibility very seriously. So
seriously that to protect the herd entrusted to him, and, especially, to
protect the children and his family, the dog is ready to give his life.
The protective qualities of these pets make them a good
choice for keeping in a private house with their own fenced area, especially as
they have an innate distrust of strangers. However, the dog requires early
socialization - familiarity with different people, their smells, and emotions,
because otherwise it can become too distrustful and show increased aggression
and anxiety even for minor reasons. This means that both your neighbors and
your guests will feel uncomfortable, and you will not be able to rest.
Appenzeller Sennenhund has a huge supply of internal energy and needs constant activity. They can not close the house for the whole day,
otherwise, the dog will become destructive, its character will spoil, it will
suffer internally and pour its suffering out. Training long walks, playing
with other dog members of your family is what you need.
Teaching
Dogs of this type certainly need both the development of
obedience and training commands that will provide the necessary food for the
mind and body. Team training, education, and socialization should begin at an
early age, at about 5-6 months. Then the training will be the most effective,
and the successes - the most pronounced.
Appenzeller Sennenhund - very intelligent and savvy dogs,
they quickly learn and learn teams well. In this process, it is important for
the host to be patient, and to start with the form of play, which is most
acceptable at an early age. If you do everything with kindness and without
nerves, there will be no problems in education, as this breed by default has an
obedient and inquisitive character.
Gradually, formative limitations can be added to the
learning process. That is, do not give the desired until the pet does not do as
it should, but demonstrate a willingness to provide it. The simplest example is
the treatment after the successful execution of commands, and its absence in
non-compliance.
How to take care of an Appenzeller Sennenhund?
Appenzeller Sennenhund does not need too complicated hair
care, as it does not have a large length. It will be enough to comb once a
week. Be sure to make sure that the dog's claws were trimmed and the ears and
eyes were clean. You need to buy a pet at least once a week, and better two.
Common diseases
Dogs of the appenzeller breed Sennenhund are distinguished
by excellent health and endurance. They have a great metabolism, high energy
level, and good immunity, so it is unlikely that you will have to visit the
veterinarian except in case of necessary vaccinations.
