English Foxhound
History
English foxhound is one of the most famous breeds of hunting
hounds. In translation, foxhound means literally "the pursuer of
foxes." Wide fame is not only the merit of the hunting qualities of the dog but also the age of the breed itself, as it originates from the ancient Celtic
hounds, including the talbot.
In addition, in the process of breeding and breeding, the medieval breeding program included interbreeding with dogs such
as greyhounds some terriers, as well as bulldogs. Medieval dog
connoisseurs proceeded from very simple principles - for courage and strength
you need the blood of a bulldog; for the speed of running, and the beauty of
addition - you need the blood of a greyhound, and terriers carry in their blood
a lot of positive qualities of character, as well as perseverance and
intelligence. English foxhound is the ancestor of many hounds, and one of the
earliest can be considered American Foxhound.
Back in 1650, English foxhounds were taken to the American
continent by Robert Brooke, a breeder, a dog by vocation, and an adventurer - in
spirit. (According to other data, the dogs were brought by Lord Fairfax in
1738). America, later, created an American version of this breed, and now
its image is the official symbol of the state of Virginia.
In England, the English foxhound is considered something of a
national treasure, and the registry of the ancestry of different branches has been
maintained since 1786. The 18th and 19th century is a time of great popularity
for this breed in Europe and England, as well as in Russia. For example,
Napoleon's flock consisted of more than 120 dogs, and in England, by the end of
the 19th century, there were almost 8,000 individuals.
In Russia, on the basis of the breed, the English foxhound was
created its own - Russian peg hound. By the way, paradoxically, now the
English Foxhound is the rarest dog registered in the American Kennel Club.

Personality
The breed of English foxhound for centuries subjected to
various training aimed at both obedience and the development of specific
qualities of a hunting dog. However, it is not possible to say that in the
process of education you will not find difficulties. The reason for this is
congenital stubbornness, without which, of course, the personality of a hound
dog would be defective.
It is thanks to its stubbornness Foxhound can be on his feet
all day with the hunter, with almost no food overcoming huge distances. In the
Middle Ages, they often ran after the horseman on horseback, and thanks to this
developed amazing endurance.
English foxhound needs early socialization, it needs a
variety of dating and an expansion of horizons. New sounds, smells, people,
other animals - all this will benefit your dog. Initially, the foxhound was not
intended for protection, and there are almost no such genes in it, but it will
definitely bark at strangers on the street if you live in a private house.
Attitudes towards strangers can vary depending on the
temperament of the dog - some perceive strangers with friendliness and
openness, others, on the contrary, more closed in this regard. By the way, to
keep them in the apartment is not very convenient, as a huge reserve of
internal energy requires constant walking, training, games, and running. If you
do not provide the animal with the proper level of activity, leaving it at home
alone - is a very bad idea. To say that a dog will create a mess is to say
nothing.
While walking on the street try to keep the pet on a leash,
as innate instincts will encourage him to run for interesting smells, sometimes
even ignoring the screams of the owner. Children are treated well, as well as
other dogs. Cats it is better to enter the circle of communication
from an early age. If you raise a foxhound and provide him with proper
conditions, it is a wonderful companion for the whole family.
Teaching
Dogs that breed English foxhounds definitely need education and
training, as their stubbornness should be turned into perseverance. Especially
since they love different types of activity, training and appreciate contact
with the owner. If they see you as an authoritative, fair, kind, and consistent
leader, they will be trained with pleasure and perseverance. If you do show
yourself as an unjust and cruel person, the dog will be avoided with innate
stubbornness.
They must be trained not only in basic commands but also to
develop obedience because otherwise, it will be extremely difficult to walk
with a dog without a leash. Here you have to overcome the innate instincts of
the pursuer and hunter, so the work must start as early as possible.
For example, in 3-4 months it is too early to teach
commands, but limiting the desire of the puppy to run while walking in the park
is necessary. Obedience should always be encouraged, for example, by stroking,
simple praise, and when the training of commands begins - something delicious.
How to take care of an English foxhound?

insects and ticks. Also, always keep your pet's eyes clean and trim your claws
if necessary. You bathe the dog once a week.
