Briard dog French Shepherd

history

One of the oldest and most well-known breeds both in France and abroad is the briard breed. These dogs are known as very sincere and kind, and their thick, long hair is a hallmark on which briard is so recognizable.

The origin of the breed dates back to the eighth century. Despite the fact that the briard was spread almost all over France, its homeland is the region of Brie (and yes - you correctly understood, the name of the region is in keeping with the name of Brie cheese). And the breed itself in the Middle Ages was long known as Chien Berger De Brie.

On the other hand, there is another story explaining the name of the breed (because we remember that it was widespread everywhere, not only in the Brie region). This second version sounds like this: a legend of the 14th century tells that Aubrey de Montdidie, the courtier of King Charles V, erected the cathedral in memory of the brave dog breed Briard, who saved the life of his son Aubrey. Chien d'Aubry eventually became the name of the breed briard. Which version to believe - to choose you.

Anyway, the French monarchs really loved these dogs, and Charlemagne is no exception. He kept several such dogs, and they often accompanied him on trips around the country and lived in the palace. This is confirmed by tapestries and other art objects left over from then, on which the emperor is often depicted with his dogs.

In addition, the Briard dog was an honorary breed of French troops during Napoleon's reign. The Emperor loved these dogs for their devotion and courage.

One of the well-known and in its own amazing facts is that this breed was brought to America by Thomas Jefferson himself - one of the founding fathers of the United States and one of the authors of the Constitution of this country. The American Kennel Club recognized this breed in 1928. But in England, these dogs were seen only in the 60s of the 20th century, which is quite unusual, given that in France the breed existed since the eighth century.

description

Briard is a strong, muscular, and slender medium-sized dog. The head is quite wide, covered with long hair, forming a beard. The limbs are of medium size, but because of the amount of wool seem short. The muzzle is a little flattened, and the ears are folded. The tail is medium, and the hair is long. The color can have any color except white, but most often it is black, fawn, gray.

personality

Breed of dogs Briard combines a lot of wonderful qualities, however, the most characteristic features - its courage, devotion, and a huge, kind dog heart. So kind that in France there is a saying - "Briard, this heart is wrapped in wool."

Briard is very attached to his family and owner and likes to be around no matter what you do. It is more important for the dog to feel contact and interact with the owner, rather than to distinguish between any particular activity. Although, of course, the dog's favorite activities are available - and it is, of course, walks, games, exercises, and even household chores, if the dog has the opportunity to help in them. For example - to drag a garden cart for an elderly mistress who lives in a private house or going to the cottage.

Briard is a herding breed of dog, and this is reflected in everyday life within the family. The pet may try to control his family as a herd by pushing you or letting his voice go. But these animals are very affectionate and love their people endlessly, although they can be stubborn and at some point may even try to put themselves in the role of leader. This quality partly comes, again, from the shepherd's past. It is quite possible to work with this, but you need to start from an early age, showing your dog who, so to speak, is the house owner and leader.

This is a lovely dog for the family, a great companion with which is always fun and fun. They have an above-average energy level, and need daily walks, active games, and exercise, as in the absence of activity can gain excess weight, in addition, it negatively affects the character of the dog.

Strangers are perceived with restraint, with distrust, although if they are friends of your family and they often visit your house, the dog will get used to them and will be friendly. Very well-treated children, but there is one subtle point. If you have a dog, but you do not have children yet and they will appear a little later, then you will need to introduce your pet to children. This will broaden his horizons and give him the concept of this, so to speak, slightly different variety of human beings.

Breed Briard has a wonderful intelligence, perfectly understands everything that happens around them, understands the person, and is able to well recognize various behavioral problems. The dog also feels the emotional state of the owner and is always happy to support his presence. And, please, this dog is more of a stay-at-home mom, and even if you have a private house with your own yard, your pet would rather choose your company inside the house than loneliness - outside. But Briard is still a great watchdog, alert and suspicious of strangers.

teaching

The briard dog needs education and obedience training, as it naturally has a penchant for stubbornness and can sometimes show its own independence. This needs to be corrected, but by no means through rudeness and uncompromising pressure.

The dog can learn many different commands, but the basics must be learned necessarily. And separately it is worth noting the harmonization of character in relation to strangers, as about 30% of individuals of this breed by default are tuned to strangers quite hostile. They may not be aggressive, but they are clearly not friendly.

You have to socialize your dog and introduce her to different people and other animals, which greatly softens the character. In the process of training be consistent, patient, with a good sense of humor, do not lose yourself on trifles, as well as a retreat if the dog immediately does not want to perform commands. And encouragement and delicious things will be a good ally in the learning process.

care

Long and thick wool ideally requires daily combing, and this is not suitable for everyone. But the minimum is combing 3 times a week. Buy the animal at least once a week, eyes clean as needed, ears three times a week. The claws are trimmed three times a month.

Common diseases

Breed of dog briard, like all breeds, has some diseases, although not the fact that you will meet them in your pet:

  • hip dysplasia is a hereditary disease in which the femur does not fit tightly to the hip joint;
  • elbow dysplasia;
  • Congenital inpatient night blindness;
  • hypothyroidism: it is a thyroid disease. It is believed that hypothermia can lead to conditions such as epilepsy, alopecia (hair loss), obesity, lethargy, hyperpigmentation, pyoderma, and other skin diseases;
  • progressive retinal atrophy;
  • von Willebrand's disease;
  • Cancer
  • gastric torsion, or, as they say, "in the people" - the turn of the intestines.

But the minimum is combing 3 times a week. Buy the animal at least once a week, eyes clean as needed, ears three times a week. The claws are trimmed three times a month. Common diseases Breed of dog briard, like all breeds, has some diseases, although not the fact that you will meet them in your pet: hip dysplasia is a hereditary disease in which the femur does not fit tightly to the hip joint; elbow dysplasia; Congenital inpatient night blindness; hypothyroidism: it is a thyroid disease. It is believed that hypothermia can lead to conditions such as epilepsy, alopecia (hair loss), obesity, lethargy, hyperpigmentation, pyoderma, and other skin diseases; progressive retinal atrophy; von Willebrand's disease; Cancer gastric torsion, or, as they say, "in the people" - the turn of the intestines.

Briard dog French Shepherd history One of the oldest and most well-known breeds both in France and abroad is the briard breed. The tail is medium, and the hair is long. The color can have any color except white, but most often it is black, fawn, gray. personality Breed of dogs Briard combines a lot of wonderful qualities, however, the most characteristic features - its courage, devotion, and a huge, kind dog heart. So kind that in France there is a saying - "Briard, this heart is wrapped in wool." Briard is very attached to his family and owner and likes to be around no matter what you do. But Briard is still a great watchdog, alert and suspicious of strangers. teaching The briard dog needs education and obedience training, as it naturally has a penchant for stubbornness and can sometimes show its own independence.
