Greyhound Dog Breed
history
English Greyhound, or as they are called in our country,
greyhound - a truly legendary breed of dogs. They are known all over the world,
and even if people do not understand dogs, and do not even know the name of
this breed, they have definitely seen these animals in movies, dog races,
gear, or just on the street.
Initially, these dogs were used for hunting (baiting)
without long-range weapons - bows or firearms, hares, foxes, and deer. Now dog
racing is also very popular. Dahl's dictionary tells us what the word greyhound
means - "quick, agile, quick, fast, glib, zealous." These
characteristics are very clearly suited to the greyhound breed (which,
incidentally, literally translates to "grey greyhound").
The main advantage of these dogs - is their huge speed, which they
are able to develop. The speed record, recorded on March 5, 1994, in Australia,
belongs to a dog named Star Title, and is, for a minute - 67.3 km/h. But even
the average dog of this breed can develop a speed in the area of 60 km/h.
The history of the Greyhound breed also deserves special
attention, because they are very ancient animals. At one time it was believed
that they originated from Africa and Egypt, as there are a lot of wall images
of their participation (for example, in the tomb of Mereruka XXI century BC),
but recent DNA tests refute these claims. However, in ancient Egypt they really
lived, and enjoyed great popularity - it is known that Queen Cleopatra had
a special affection for these dogs.
Another version of origin, more realistically, according to
recent studies, is that the ancestors of greyhound dogs originated in The Middle East, and subsequently lived on the European continent, from where they
got to Egypt. Maybe with the Romans. Be that as it may, these dogs are present
in the ancient texts and drawings of many human civilizations.
In medieval Europe, as in England, hunting with greyhounds
was extremely popular, and, not only among the nobility but also among
commoners, until 1014. In 1014, the law on forests was published, according to
which hunting was declared the prerogative of the nobility, and for commoners in
the forest lands, which belonged to noble people, it was impossible to hunt, as
well, as to keep greyhound dogs.
In America, the Greyhound breed appeared with the colonist's
researchers. It can be said that for many thousands of years these dogs were
extremely appreciated all over the world, both for their amazing speed and for
their amazing intelligence and understanding.
The greyhound dog breed was one of the first to participate in
dog shows in America, and the American Kennel Club recognized them in 1885. And
the first running dog race in the United States took place in 1886.
