Belgian Shepherd Tervuren
History
The Belgian Shepherd Tervuren is one of the traditional
Belgian breeds. These include:
- (long-haired, gray-black, pale, or red);
- Grendel (long-haired, black);
- lakenooa (hard-haired);
- raspberry (short-haired).
In fact, dogs like The Belgian Shepherds have long grown and
evolved in this area, however, at some point dog breeders decided to conduct a
study, and identify the main types of dogs. However, it was the breeders who
subsequently divided the Belgian Shepherd into four main types. In particular,
the breed tervure has its own history.
The name of the breed, known in its homeland as Chien de
Berger Belge comes from the village of Tervuren, where a breeder named M.F.
Corbeil lived. In the early 20th century, he thought it was possible to cross
black and fawn dogs to standardize modern Tervuren.
Tervuren - the dog is really versatile. Before the
industrial era seriously captured Belgium, these pets were really needed by
people, and first of all - farmers. Just because there were still quite a lot
of farms, they needed both a reliable guard of the territories and a dog
that could help in grazing cattle in the pastures.
When, however, due to the development of the industry, the number of farms decreased, Tervureen remained a watchdog and a companion for
ordinary residents who do not conduct farming activities, in addition, it has
always been in demand in the barnyards.
Currently, tervure, in addition to the above functions, is
also used as police dogs K-9, in border and other troops, in search and rescue
operations, and as dogs for the disabled. In addition, the breed tervure - champions at a dog show in agility, as well as in tests for obedience and
grazing.

the body is long, especially on the neck and chest, where it forms a collar.
The color is gray-black, fawn, or red.
Personality
The breed of Tervuren dogs has a very kind and open
character, especially in relation to his family. This is truly the perfect
companion and a wonderful friend for a person of any age who is always happy to
be able to help everyone in his power. These dogs have great intelligence, they
understand the person perfectly, are very smart, always feel the situation in
the house and, with the right education, always know what can be done and what
can not. Thanks to excellent memory remember a lot of commands, moreover, if
the dog is well trained it just often understands what is wanted from her, and
does everything right.
Behave nobly, intelligently, and discreetly, with strangers who do not show aggression, but are also not too friendly. At least if it's not a
family friend whom the pet knows well. On the other hand, much depends on the
upbringing, and the ability of the owner to socialize with his dog as effectively as
possible. Although, usually, the breed is well aware of the learning process
and tends to please the owner.
However, Tervuren has a very high level of energy, which is
not surprising for a dog that herds sheep and cows all day long in mountain
pastures. It is extremely important to direct the energy in the right
direction, otherwise, the independent character can lead to difficulties. You
should remember that herding dogs often spent a lot of time away from the
owner, and had to make their own decisions.
In addition, do not forget that you will have to provide the
animal with the proper level of physical activity, namely - long walks, running,
active games. If you can not provide a high level of activity, and the dog will
stay at home alone during the day, and you will walk it in the morning for 5
minutes and in the evening for 10, it will end with the fact that it will start
nibbling furniture, scatter things and in general, its character will spoil.
It is necessary to clearly understand that the dog needs a
close relationship with the owner, and is not suitable for everyone. You really
have to spend a lot of time with her. Tervuren is quite sensitive in emotional
terms because acutely feels negative in his direction that, over time,
accumulates and gives its fruits.
Children are perceived well, they love them by default, can
be good nannies, because they feel responsible for them. Like many other
herding dogs, they can sometimes bite children by the heels and try to drive
them into a room, for example - in the evening. But, it is rather joking, very
positive, and always causes a smile.
Teaching
The tervure breed needs proper education, which is necessary
not only for acquiring skills and memorizing teams but also for character
formation. It is important to be a good and fair owner with the dog, as this
breed categorically does not accept rough methods of communication and
beatings, and very keenly feels injustice. In addition, they generally have a
high emotional sensitivity.
The negative accumulates and breaks the character of the
dog, making it timid and introverted, but this is only one side of the coin.
After all, deeply suppressed heartache can then shoot, the dog will become
uncontrollable, will cause trouble and no one can say what will be the
secondary cause. Although, with the breed of service this happens very rarely.
Rather, the animal will be locked in itself and just often will ignore the
owner. They can learn a lot of different commands because not for nothing they
are used in search operations and as assistants for the disabled.
Care
Longwool needs to be combed at least two to three times a
week. Normally, a haircut is required. These dogs are quite shed, and some
people even knit socks, mittens, and a scarf from this wool, by the way, very
warm and soft.
Eyes should be cleaned daily, ears 2-3 times a week, trim
claws three times a month, and bathe the dog at least once a week.
Not recommended for the city or accommodation in the
apartment. Tervuren feels best in the countryside with work and enough space to
safely roam, run, work and play.
Common diseases
The breed of Tervuren dog has a tendency to some diseases,
although usually, they are healthy and strong animals:
- hip dysplasia;
- hip malformation;
- elbow dysplasia;
- progressive retinal atrophy, which causes vision loss and blindness;
- epilepsy.
