Bedlington Terrier Dog
History
Bedlington Terrier is a rather old breed that actively
developed in medieval England. However, they came from very different places,
but from which - no one knows for sure. There is an assumption, and it is
believed by most dog breeders, that these dogs traveled with the gypsies, so
they got to England.
Gypsies used them to hunt small game, as well as poultry
(yes, you did not hear, no matter how it sounded) - dogs were taught to carry
chickens, geese, and turkeys from farms, past which passed the camp. Although
the appearance of a dog tells us that it is an aristocrat performing purely
decorative functions, in fact, it is not so. Rather, this appearance was given
to him by man, and the dog itself has excellent instincts of the hunter and can
be very useful than people used in the Middle Ages. Bedlington Terrier dog defiantly
destroyed badgers and rats.
His talents in getting rid of rats, badgers,
and other
parasites caught the attention of local squires who purchased some dogs. One of
the squires served Lord Roth's bury, and after showing him a new dog, he became
an ardent fan of the breed. He bought several more from the same wandering
gypsies.
Lord Rothberg’s estate was located in Bedlington, which at
that time belonged to the county of Northumberland. At first, the dogs were even
called by the name of Lord - Roth bury, but then there was only the name of the
area where these dogs were in high esteem. There are legends, or rumors, as you
prefer, that the Lord valued his dogs much more than the peasants in their own
villages.
The dog, to which the name Bedlington Terrier was used, was
Piper Ainslie, owned by Joseph Ainslie from the same Bedlington. This piper dog
went against the badger for the first time when he was only 8 months old,
toothless and almost blind, he was still involved in hunting alongside young
dogs, setting an example.
Other breeds also took part in the formation of modern Bedlington’s
at different times. For example, in order to increase speed and agility, their
interbreeding with Whippets. Also, the interbreeding was carried out
with dandy din Mont terriers, Kerry blue terrier sand wheat
terriers. Bedlington began to participate in exhibitions in the mid-19th
century, and in 1877 the National Bedlington Terrier Club was established in
England.

feature - curly hair strip from the head to the nose, ears hanging.

Personality
Bedlington Terrier a happy dog and they like to play with
toys, they have an energy level above average and is not suitable for those who
are not ready to provide proper walks, full active games, and physical activity.
This is necessary for the pet to feel happy and satisfied. In addition, it is a
very smart dog, which not only understands everything that happens around it
and perfectly remembers the commands, but also draws its own conclusions.
This imposes certain rules in behavior and training, but
more on that later. In regards to their family, the breed shows great love and
devotion, it is really very affectionate and friendly dogs, able to become the
best friend of everyone. Although sometimes they are characterized by refined
selfishness - they like to be in the spotlight, show themselves from the funny
side, and feel the views full of love and approval.
These terriers will gladly go with you on a hike, for a
walk, feeling in the park or in the woods, like a fish in the water. But if you
sit on your sofa, the dog will happily sit next to you. They are not
recommended to leave alone for a long time, as Bedlington Terrier is very
attached to his family and poorly tolerates long separation. In addition, they
are generally very people-oriented, and if every day you go to work and there
is no one at home, it is better to choose another breed of dog.
The breed is well suited as a watchdog, although, let's be
honest, these dogs in this capacity now almost do not use, except at home.
Moreover, the residents of Bedlington say that their terriers are very astute,
have a wonderful ear, and instantly react to the intruder.
With other dogs get along well, especially if periodically
meet or grow together, but possible same-sex aggression. By the way, despite
their aristocratic appearance, these pets are able to get into a serious fight
and not to retreat to the last (especially males will fight until they get a
serious injury), so during the walks, you need to be alert.
Children are well received, can become great friends to
them. Strangers, if it's your friends, guests, or just people on the street who
do not show negativity, perceive with friendliness. The instincts of the Hunter
in the Bedlington’s are quite strong because in the past they were bred and
kept for this purpose. Therefore, they are more likely to hunt small animals or at least try to do so while walking. Now dogs are mostly of interest as
companions and great friends for the whole family.
Teaching
Bedlington Terrier is well trained, but in working with him
there are certain subtleties. Due to their high intelligence, these dogs
perfectly assimilate commands, but they need to be encouraged and shown in every
way that training is necessary for them. If the pet does not understand this,
he will learn, but after reaching some inner traits he will lose interest.
If we were talking about a person, one could say that he
sees the sense of improving himself for his own sake, not for helping others.
But it is a dog, and therefore it is much easier to outsmart it. Sometimes, but
not always, it is enough just to properly position yourself as a leader, as
well as to make the life of the pet more diverse, using commands in everyday
life.
Then he will understand that these commands are needed for
him, in addition, for them he receives encouragement, and for non-compliance,
on the contrary, is deprived of something valuable, for example - does not
immediately get a toy or a yummy. Roughness and violence with The Bedlington
Terriers are counterproductive and only harmful.
Care
The Bedlington Terrier breed has curly hair, which many cut
in a certain way, although it is a matter of taste. In any case, you need to
comb your pet a couple of times a week, as well as keep your ears and eyes
clean. The claws are trimmed three times a month, bathe the dog at least once a
week.

- Distichiasis;
