 English Springer Spaniel

History

The English Springer Spaniel was specifically bred for bird hunting and retains these qualities to this day. In general, the spaniel is a rather old breed, which was very common in medieval Europe. Especially in England, Spain, and France, although other countries also did not lag behind. The aristocracy was extremely fond of these dogs for their wonderful character, aesthetic appearance, and ability to hunt.

Spaniels were mentioned in The Law of Wales as far back as 300 AD. So - judge for yourself how long they have been working with people. Dogs, very reminiscent of the current English Springer Spaniels, are depicted in works of art of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Even before the invention of firearms, the spaniel was used as a dog that drove birds out of bushes and thickets, to an open area where hunters were waiting for them. Hound dogs with nets attached to them, as well as bows and arrows, were used to catch birds and small animals. After the invention of firearms slightly changed and the principles of hunting, however, spaniels here have shown themselves as best as possible.

Interestingly, dogs of one litter during the 19th and early 20th centuries in England were classified by their hunting use, not by breed. Smaller dogs were used to hunt woodcock - they were called cocker spaniels. Larger puppies from the same litter were called Springers and were used, among other things, for some hunting games.

But that all changed in 1902. The Kennel Club of England singled out a separate position in its own breeding book for the English Springer Spaniel and separately classified them on display a year later - in 1903. At this exhibition, the famous dog breeder and judge Mr. William Arkwright gave his assessment.

The Dog Challenge certificate went to co-owner Will Beechgrove, who belonged to Mr. Winton Smith, as well as a named Harry Jones. In 1906, Will Beechgrove became the first dog champion of the breed. Until the late 30s, early 40s of the 20th century, there was no division into field and exhibition dogs, however, gradually this division appeared.

Field dogs have a sharper sense of smell, speed, endurance, and ability to work, moreover - today field and exhibition dogs do not cross. Both types have a hunting instinct and can work in tandem with the hunter, but very few English springer spaniels can show excellent results both in the field and on the show. The last two-time champion (champion in field and conformation competitions) was a dog named "Green Valley Punch" in 1938.

Personality

English springer spaniel is always very human-oriented, showing great love and affection in the circle of his family. This breed is strongly attached to its owners, and since in principle it feels a great love for people, it is not a dog of one owner. She does not choose a particular person to love and loves just her loved ones who grow day by day.

By the way, precisely because of their great affection, these dogs are not recommended to leave alone for a long time and leave alone during the day, when the whole family or at work, or at school (who were). The dog will experience internal suffering from this. In addition, at an early age, if the dog is left alone even for a short time, and then you come home, then joy can show urination. In fact, you can work with it.

For example, try not to show strong emotions and generally ignore the dog immediately upon coming home, and notice it only when it will be 5-10 minutes. Thus, you will not maintain the excessive emotionality of your pet, and he will gradually learn to perceive what is happening more evenly. But you can start at an early age.

English Springer Spaniel has a high level of energy and needs daily walks, physical activities, active games, and generally active pastimes. Moreover, if you go with the dog to the park, you better keep it on a leash and let go in a strictly fenced area.

Since, first, it is likely to hunt for birds, because there is an instinct, and secondly, just can go hunting beyond your visibility ignoring the commands, but also simply - to explore the world around, which is so attractive and wonderful. The pet can feel great both in the city apartment and in the yard of a private house, where he will feel great freedom.

However, the English Springer Spaniel is not suitable for watchful functions, because when strangers approach your house or fence, it will certainly bark, but attack the intruders of the territory will not. Just because of humanity. So if you need a reliable and dangerous watchdog, we mean - dangerous for intruders, this breed should not be chosen.

Children are well received, especially if they grow up next to them. Other pets, such as Cats even Chomsky, or guinea pigs may be perceived positively if they are taught to be present from an early age. Have high intelligence and are usually obedient.

Teaching

Breed English Springer Spaniel has excellent ability to learn, it needs training and training. You can teach them a variety of commands, so the dog has a good memory and generally likes to learn and assimilate new knowledge.

In addition, these dogs feel the inner pleasure of interacting with the owner, from encouragement, and generally from working in pairs with a loved one. Classes should be positive, without rudeness, you definitely need patience, a sense of humor, and a large number of goodies and praise.

Care

English springer spaniel has a rather long coat, which should be combed at least twice a week, and better three. The claws are trimmed three times a month. Buy a dog at least once a week or more. Ears are cleaned three times a week and after walking in the woods or park, as usually the spaniel with its hanging ears collects all the dust and dirt, the eyes are cleaned daily.
