Irish Water Spaniel Irish Water Spaniel Dog History?  The Irish Water Spaniel belongs to the ancient breeds, although, there is no exact data on its origin. The information is quite contradictory, however, most dog historians and breeders agree that the Irish Water Spaniel comes from a mixture of many other breeds of spaniels. But Irish folklore tells us quite clearly that this dog originated from the ancient Dobhar Chu.  As you can see, there is a lot of information, it causes contradictions, and we will try to systematize it somewhat. It is possible that the Irish water spaniel does come from the Dobhar Chu, however, subsequently, the breed was mixed with other spaniels. It is assumed that this involved:  Portuguese water dog; barbet; old water dog; English water spaniel (extinct); poodle; northern and southern water spaniels.      But these are only the assumptions of breeders, since the person who made the breed as we know it today, did not leave any data for subsequent generations. His name was Justin McCarthy, and he lived in Dublin.  He developed the Breed Irish Water Spaniel in the first half of the 19th century, and a decent result appeared in 1830 or so. Justin was a hunter and wanted to breed a dog that would meet his ideas about the ideal hunting dog, capable, among other things, of pulling a beaten bird out of the water. By the way, it is believed that this is one of the oldest spaniels on the planet, in addition, these are the largest spaniels of all existing. And - very rare.
