Alapaha Bulldog
History/Profile of Alapaha Bulldog
The Alapaha Bulldog is a rare breed, but very colorful. No
less colorful is the history of these beautiful animals. It all started when a
farmer from Rebecca, Georgia, named Buck Lane, decided to rebuild the
"bulldogs of southern planters." His farm was located near the
Alapajo River - so these bulldogs got their name.
For these purposes, he began a breeding program, however,
over time, he added other breeds there. Buck Lane's granddaughter, Lana Lou
Lane, recalled that their old dog had been on the farm "for as long as she
could remember" and his name was Otto. Subsequently, the bulldog Alapaha
never got rid of his nickname - "Bulldog Otto".
It is believed that the breeding program started in the
early 20th century, although, strictly speaking, this is not entirely true. In
order to achieve the best results in obtaining a dog with excellent external
characteristics and internal qualities, the following were added to the
program:
- white English bulldogs who arrived in the United States in the 18th century;
- Catahoula's leopard dog;
- Colby Pit Bull Terriers;
- the now extinct mountain bulldog.
Thus, it was possible not only to get rid of some
unfavorable features of English bulldogs, improving the characteristics of the
breed as a whole but also to significantly increase the number of individuals.
In 1943, Buck Lane was hit by a train and died. His old dog came to the grave
of the owner almost every day and spent some time there. Today, the number of
the breed has decreased to 150 individuals (around the world), which causes
serious concerns for dog handlers. In the past few years, American dog breeders
have been trying to increase the population of the Alapaha breed.

Personality
The Alapaha Bulldog is a very smart, independent, and loyal
dog. In addition, this breed has an incredibly positive and friendly character,
which directly affects the perception of the world and daily behavior. On the
one hand, the Alapaha can be very determined, on the other hand, he likes to be
the center of attention, loves to be funny, playful, and in general - the best
dog in the world.
Alapaha may be a bit stubborn, but overall he is very loyal.
He is well aware of his place in the family (pack), and may try to take the
place of the leader, so it is necessary to show the dog its place from an early
age. But - with kindness and patience, not forgetting about wisdom. He treats
children wonderfully, thanks to his sense of responsibility, great devotion, and
developed intellect can sometimes be in the role of a nanny for a child. But
this is not to say that this is the vocation of the breed.
It copes well with the guard functions, there are usually no
problems in training. The Alapaha perceives strangers neutrally, but always
monitors the behavior of the owner and his attitude to the person. If the dog
defends its territory, then strangers will be perceived as hostile.
They perfectly adapt to living conditions, loneliness is not
perceived very well, but for some time during the day, they can be alone. They
need physical activity, long walks, and mental stimulation.
Common diseases
They do not drool and do not have breathing problems,
unlike English bulldogs. Health data are not enough due to the small number
of breeds.
